I love his music and reading his story brought tears to my eyes. May 20, 2011 Michelle Recommends it for: someone looking for a good testimony, fans of Jeremy Camp, Christians or seekers I loved this book!!! If you aren't a huge fan of Jeremy Camp, you will be after you read this book. Jeremy starts at the beginning & shares the story of his parents coming to Christ, which if full of God's fingerprints. And then he shares his own spiritual journey, which has been a series of ups-and-downs, especially for his relatively young age. His story is a powerful one. I think it is easy to identify with his story because it is so similar to many Christians own experiences - for I loved this book!!! If you aren't a huge fan of Jeremy Camp, you will be after you read this book. I think it is easy to identify with his story because it is so similar to many Christians own experiences - for example, he grew up in a Christian family but then strayed a bit in high school. He eventually came back to his faith (obviously) but then encountered tough situations that required him to choose between having faith in God or straying again. While it probably would have been easier to just walk away from God, he chose to have faith and while his story doesn't always take the turn you are hoping it will, his testimony & belief that God is taking him in the right direction is inspiring. And it was fun to read about some of the blessings that have come from that faith & decision to follow God through the toughest of times. I love that he shares scripture throughout his book & shows how it has impacted his life or helped him through a difficult time - it's inspiring to see how different pieces of scripture have helped him at different times in his journey. There are times that I think about what songs would be in the soundtrack to different "eras" of my life; so the way he shared scripture made it fun for me to think about what scriptures would apply to different eras of my life. Fans of Jeremy's music will enjoy that this book contains some of his lyrics and the stories behind those lyrics, sprinkled throughout the narrative of the book, in chronological order. And fans of Jeremy's will also enjoy the few pages of photos he shares at the end of book of him and his family... Jan 26, 2013 Sara I started listening to Jeremy Camp’s music probably around the mid-2000s and my top three favorites of his are This Man, Restored, and Walk by Faith. When I first heard his music, I liked it – especially those three favorite songs – but I wouldn’t have necessarily called him my favorite artist. I am definitely not claiming to be a music critic, but I often thought that Camp’s music lacked…something. That changed when I saw him in concert with Casting Crowns in 2007. Now, my husband and I don’t I started listening to Jeremy Camp’s music probably around the mid-2000s and my top three favorites of his are This Man, Restored, and Walk by Faith. Now, my husband and I don’t often go to music concerts. We love music, we both play instruments, but we just don’t have the time or money to attend that many concerts. When we found out that Casting Crowns was going to be coming to Indiana, we decided to splurge and take the time to go see our favorite Christian band in concert. The fact that Jeremy Camp would be there, too, was a bonus. At the concert, we really enjoyed Casting Crowns, but we were truly blown away by Jeremy Camp. His songs came alive when he was on stage, and he was so real. (It was also neat to see his emotion at being back in Indiana - this was soon after he had moved to Nashville, Tennessee). I think that is what doesn’t come through very well when you hear his songs on the radio – the emotion, the depth of faith, and the realness. OK, so after that tangent about music, I will turn my focus to the book. Since I have seen Camp in concert, I somewhat knew the story of his first wife, Melissa, and what he went through during her illness and after her death. I Still Believe is a more complete story of Jeremy’s life growing up, the journey he and Melissa went through, and the paths his life has taken since. I’m pretty sure this is an updated version of a book by this same name that was released a few years ago. Read my complete review here:..... Nov 02, 2011 Jennifer Ward Christians I bought this book knowing a little bit about Jeremy’s testimony. Jeremy lost his first wife to cancer & he also had a miscarriage with his second wife. He was very poor growing up & now he’s a Christian artist who lifts up so many people through his music. Now after reading this book his music means so much more to me. This book walks you through Jeremy’s real life example of walking by Faith & leaves you yearning to want to know God & trust God more. It’s a simple down-to-earth I bought this book knowing a little bit about Jeremy’s testimony. It’s a simple down-to-earth read. Our family also had tragedy. Who doesn’t? I lost my nephew to SUDC/SIDS. Anyone who is dealing with loss needs to read this book and be encouraged! I love reading books that change you from the inside out. This is one of them. We all experience life’s storms. This book is very encouraging & shows us how to clung onto faith and hope through these difficult times in our lives. It shows you what peace that passes understanding looks like. I pray that everyone experiences this peace. This is an awesome book to pass on so it can keep ministering to others... Oct 30, 2011 Heather A huge fan of Christian music, I am quite familiar with Jeremy Camp’s music. He has written and performed some of my favorite songs in recent years, but I hadn’t known his story until now. And all I can say is wow. He has been through so much, and his faith in God is absolutely amazing. This account of Jeremy’s heartache is raw and heartbreaking. Honestly, it’s amazing to me that anyone can come out of such an ordeal with their faith not just in tact, but stronger than before. God has truly A huge fan of Christian music, I am quite familiar with Jeremy Camp’s music. God has truly blessed him for his perseverance. Yes, he’s struggled – what human wouldn’t? – and fought God in his darkest times, but he pressed through. God helped him not only make it through, but come out the other side victorious. He has such an amazing story that shows God’s awesome power and glory. Wow. Reading this story has given me an even greater appreciation for his music. I would highly recommend I Still Believe to fans of Jeremy Camp’s music, anyone struggling with loss and/or cancer (either personally or watching a loved one go through it), and anyone looking for some inspiration... Dec 22, 2011 Brenda really liked it Very simply written, quick to read book, but it packs a big punch emotionally and is very inspirational. Jeremy Camp is my favorite singer, and it was wonderful to read the backstory on some of his songs and read about what he went through in his life. Nov 14, 2011 Merisa I have listened to and loved Jeremy Camp's music for several years but I never knew what a powerful testimony he has. This is a great, easy read about real life and how God is never far away. Aug 01, 2011 Brandi My husband and I are huge fans of his music and his story is amazing. I cried during this book. This book made me love & appreciate Jeremy Camp's music more than I already do. What a wonderful testimony! Oct 12, 2011 Jill Welton After seeing Jeremy perform last weekend, I was excited to read his story. Like most fans, I knew of the death of his first wife. But to know her story, in all of its fullness, is still impacting the world for Christ years after she's passed. The book is a quick and easy read. I already have a line of friends that want to borrow the book. I will gladly oblige, but not before I have my two oldest girls read his book! I will gladly oblige, but not before I have my two oldest girls read his book! I can see how his testimony, and that of his family, can provide great encouragement for Christians in every stage of life. He does talk about his high school years and choices he made. It wasn't easy, but he eventually turned a 180 and didn't look back. That's a hard thing to do in public high school. I'm not just impressed with his courage, on many levels, but his consistent walk with Christ through the ups and downs life will bring. He truly has learned to "walk by faith, not by sight! ".. Jan 13, 2012 Stephanie Joy I've been wanting to read this book for a year and finally was able to borrow a copy last night. I read it in 2 hours, devouring Jeremy's testimony of how God carried him through tremendous grief to victory in knowing that God works all things together for the good of those who love him. So many of his sentiments echoed the feelings I've experienced over the past year and a half and put words to some truths that God revealed to me over time. I've been a fan of Jeremy's music for years, but I've been wanting to read this book for a year and finally was able to borrow a copy last night. I've been a fan of Jeremy's music for years, but reading the story behind several of his songs of having faith even when we don't understand our circumstances makes them that much more special to me now. I highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially those who need encouragement to get through a trial... Mar 30, 2013 Jessica This book was so inspirational. Jeremy Camp has went through a lot of tribulation, but has survived by knowing that God is loving. For those who do not know, Jeremy Camp's first wife, Melissa, died from cancer very shortly after they got married. This book shows how his parents became Christians and his struggles during his teenage years, how he grew in his faith due to his first wife's passing, and how he came to love his second wife, Adrienne. For me, this book encouraged me that God is always This book was so inspirational. For me, this book encouraged me that God is always with you even when you are suffering, everything happens for a reason (God's plan), and that God always wants the best for us. This is a must read!.. Sep 02, 2011 Kathryn I was interested to pick this up because I've enjoyed Jeremy Camp's music for several years and never knew the whole story about his first wife's battle with cancer (having never been to a concert and not listening to CCM radio, I guess). This was more than an interesting biography, though, it was a very hopeful little tome about living with the sickness and passing of a loved one, and living one's life after a huge loss. I especially appreciated the Scripture notations in the footnotes for I was interested to pick this up because I've enjoyed Jeremy Camp's music for several years and never knew the whole story about his first wife's battle with cancer (having never been to a concert and not listening to CCM radio, I guess). Very glad I read this, and would recommend it to anyone struggling in their Christian walk or dealing with a monumental loss... Sep 27, 2016 Marion I love Jeremy Camp's music and had heard all about what happened with Melissa through mutual friends from Calvary Chapel Bible College. To hear it though in his words and how God helped him heal through songwriting was amazing. I liked how his wife, Adrienne, was brought in to share her perspective. I didn't like the font picked for her words, but that's just the administrative assistant in me LOL. I hope they continue to glorify God through their family life and music! Sep 26, 2011 Michaela Amazing book! Very power and also sad during the chapters about his wife's passing. Yes, I cried, but it was amazing to read about their strength and faith in the Lord that they had during and after that hard time. Everyone who loves Jeremy Camp or is looking for a spiritual pick me up should read this book. I thought this book was very good. It almost made me cry. The story behind it is very moving, and a very powerful way for his word usage. He is my favorite artist in the world. And after this book I will love him forever no matter what. I recommend this book to anybody who has the 2 hours to put in to read this wonderful book. If you like touching books this is the book for you. I've always loved hearing testimonies, whether from a stranger or from those I am close to. Jeremy Camp shares his testimony, no holds bar, allowing you to see Gods work of grace in his life as though you were his best friend. The testimony is powerful, the message is real, the effect of reading is powerful. I highly recommend this book! Sep 24, 2011 Tricia Loved it!! Brought me to tears. Powerful testimony of God's faithfulness Jun 13, 2013 Bethany a really beautiful memoir. Jeremy camp admits that he doubted The Lord and expressed anger at The Lord. he also found his answer!! Inspiring! I love his music too!! Sep 04, 2012 Eric liked it I thought this book was both inspirational and informational. Shedded light on grief a little bit. Jeremy's story talks about handling grief. Dec 30, 2017 Josh Reynolds To no surprise, the story of Jeremy Camp's life and road to devotion toward Christ took you through a lense of emotion. Jeremy has been through devastation, prevailing through it all he encourages a strong relationship with Christ through the word and scripture as well as church. By the time December of that year rolled around, we knew she had Hodgkin's Disease--a cancer of the lymphatic system. By January of 1992, we were fully engaged in the first round of a six-month regimen of chemotherapy. This would be followed up with six consecutive, five-day a week radiation treatments. This is how we spent the first year of our marriage. I Still Believe is a memoir written by popular Christian musician and songwriter Jeremy Camp. I was on the early bandwagon for Jeremy and still own and listen to his first three records. I have always enjoyed his music, his guitar playing, and the tone and depth of his vocals. After reading this book, I think I can now say that I also appreciate the lyrics to his songs as well. It's not that I didn't enjoy them before, but I think like most, I listened to the lyrics, often sang along, but rarely gave thought to what they might mean or what the background might be. Frankly, I am a big fan of musicians sharing the background to songs they write. It makes the songs more meaningful. That said, this was a difficult book to read. I'm sure it was a difficult book to write. It made me think about my own walk with my wife: after her cancer at the age of 20-21 we have enjoyed nearly 23 years of marriage. But I am also acutely aware of the fact that her cancer could manifest itself again at any time. We are not so much in control as we like to think. And the struggle is summed up nicely in Camp's song and title: I Still Believe. But will we? We suffer and struggle a lot in this journey and it is terribly easy to fall back and forget that we are like so much gold in the fires of purification. We often blame God, accuse God, yell at God, shake our fist at God--and sometimes we just flat out ignore him. I think God is big and strong and can handle it and waits for us to come to our senses, but he waits. He is that Father who is waiting on his son and sees him off in the distance and runs to him. And I think this is what troubles me the most: he waits. Sure there are sermons (or poetry) about God the great hound nipping at our heals. The Psalms tell us over and over again to 'wait on the Lord' and it is just that that bugs me. We are told to wait; he is waiting; someone has to make the first move. Someone has to get the ball rolling. Someone has to take charge. What we are supposed to learn, I think, is that God is in charge and all we can do is weep, wait, fall face down on the floor in prayer. Maybe we are to be like Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego: God can rescue us, oh king, but even if he doesn't we want you to know that we will not bow down to your statue of gold. When I was in homiletics class at Bible College, one of the first an most enduring lessons I learned about preaching was this: don't talk about yourself in sermons. If you do, we were told, you make yourself out to be a hero of sorts and that's not always happiness. That is, it makes the person speaking seem to be less than humble. To this day, I can say that I may have spoken about my wife's cancer (and a subsequent bout with hemolytic anemia 2 years later) only a handful of times--which is an arrogant thing to say. That's what made the memoir, the memoir of someone who hasn't had trouble succeeding, very difficult to read. There is a tremendous depth of honesty and candor in the writing, but it comes off as heroic; a lot. Camp probably doesn't intend it to be so, but it does nonetheless. This was the least redeeming aspect of the book. It's a difficult path. You want to tell your story. You want to honor Jesus. But there's always the struggle of painting yourself too highly. It may not be intentional, but it is inevitable. Yet it is a good story to read. I read the revised and expanded edition so I have no idea what was changed or altered from the previous (2011) version. I'm not sure this book is worthy of a second read, although some may think it is. I also think this book is written for younger people--maybe college age or high school. It's not going to win a Pulitzer Prize or anything, but he's probably not trying to either. He is sharing his testimony before the Lord in the hopes that one person might hear and be saved. I'm fine with that. He deals with weighty issues: I too would have been devastated if my wife had died during that first year of our marriage. Jeremy Camp gives us a wonderful picture of what the depths of sorrow and devastation are like--and perhaps how to respond to such devastation. And in this regard, we can come alongside Jeremy and sit in the ashes with him for a while. It is good to be sorrowful together, to carry one another's burdens, and to weep together in the Lord. But he also gives us a picture of what it means to trust and wait on the Lord--to Stay 'right there in the light. ' I might find him a bit too heroic at times, but I cannot say he is not faithful. I might not read the book again, but I'll keep listening to his music. There, in his songs, is where his testimony is. 3. 5/5 Stars... Dec 14, 2019 Aaron Reinwald A very good tale of finding joy, peace and comfort from tragedy, by looking within and seeing what God says to your heart. It is also a story about what it truly means to have faith in something. If you're a non believer it can also be translated to intuition, the universe or joy I suppose. I enjoyed the ride nonetheless. Jul 31, 2017 Amy Hornek A short autobiography of Christian music writer and singer Jeremy Camp's life and struggles. He discusses how the death of his young wife led him to a deeper understanding and relationship with the Lord. A great little book for others who are having a difficult time with the hard questions of life. Jeremy Camp retells his story of his late wife, who passed from cancer at a young age. This is not a book about his career, but rather his journey as a Christian and how he put his faith in God during trying times. Although Jeremy Camp is not the best writer, his story is very compelling. It's a beautiful love story Feb 15, 2017 Kim What an amazing testimony! In addition to acting in many plays, Gary also directed some of Steppenwolf's most notable productions, including Sam Shepard's "True West".
